Harry Agema
Information about the artist

The art of Harry Agema could be characterized as abstract expressionism or, from time to time, totally geometrical. For a long time, 18 years, Harry Agema has been working on 2 themes; "Suggestive Music" and "Handlines" (the lines you can find on a human hand). His art consists of lines and circles, spirals and crosses, forms and colours inspired by the rhythm of music and the hand lines on the human hand. The pictures are not just abstract pictures - they are real and alive - they are expressions of the soul and mood of a human being, of the artist. They are music!

Harry Agema is born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 4th of December, 1946. He lived and worked there until 1993 when he moved to Bergen N.H. in The Netherlands, a well-known artist village near the North Sea. At the age of 30 he began a teachers training course, majoring in Forming, Ceramics and Art History. His painting and graphic art techniques, however, are self-thought. Agema has been a full time artists for more than 20 years, and his has produced a vast number of oil, acrylic and mixed media paintings and more than 200 different prints. He also produces wooden sculptures and ceramic art. One of his projects has been to read 500 poems and produce a drawing of each and everyone of them.

Harry Agema on his "Suggestive Music"- suite:

"The basis of music is rhythm. Our bodies overflow with all sorts of rhythms. It moves out from the beating of our heart, creating the pulsation of our arteries and our breath. The blinking of the eyes, swallowing, body movements, etc - all follow a rhythmical pattern. Colour and sound is also inextricably bound to these rhythms. The various rhythmical activities within us create a certain composition; feeling, movement, rhythm and form, all relate in some manner to music, In my "Suggestive Music" I translate these movements into an artistic composition - I suggest a moment of emotional experience."

In 2004 his prints were accepted by a jury to the MINIPRINT FINLAND 2004, 5th International Miniprint Triennal in Lahti, Finland. More than 800 artists participated and only a few where selected - this is a clear recognition of the high quality of the art of Harry Agema

We have no picture of Harry Agema available (as he wished not to have any published), but, looking at his art, we think the picture to the right could symbolize the inner sole of the artist.

Harry Agema on his "Handline Composition"-suite

"A process is clearly seen in the skin, especially the skin of the hands, where, the lines and consequent forms created can be read like a musical score, providing us with a sort of map of this inner rhythmical process."

In his "
Handline Compositions" Agema makes exceptional use of these qualities. The basic forms of cross, spiral and triangle and other forms return repeatedly with their spiritual-symbolistic characteristics, but under constant fluctuating circumstances.
