Mr Juha Tammenpää
Information about the artist

”As if I was illustrating my own wanderings”
This is how Mr Juha Tammenpää wants to describe his artistic work.
Juha Tammenpää is a printmaker that accepts only the best result, and devotes himself to details. He has travelled a lot and gets his inspiration from the ancient mythology, the Mexican, Indian and Arabic cultures, music, dreams and the folk-tales “Kalevala” from Finland. Everything blends in the mind of the artist and as a result we get the fantastic art of Juha Tammenpää.

He is one of the best known Finnish printmakers, and he has had numeral exhibitions in Finland and abroad. His work is represented in many museums and collections around the world. Now his prints are internationally sold by BestNetArt Artgallery.

Tammenpää lives in Sundom, a rural area near the west coast city of Vaasa in Finland. He is born in 1959, is married and has 4 children. He has been working with print-making almost all his life. Already at home he was exposed to art and print-making because his father, Tapani Tammenpää, is a famous Finnish printmaker. He has attended university courses in printmaking, but to a great extent he is self learned, and as he himself puts it: “I am still learning”.

Let’s read what Juha Tammenpää tells us about his work:
“The technique I apply in my work as a printmaker originated in the 15th and 16th centuries. Little has changed in the method. I am thus a contributor of an ancient European tradition of graphic art. I draw the picture on a metal plate that has been polished and covered with a certain compound. Thereafter, the drawing is to be etched. Finally, after several complicated stages, the picture will be printed by hand on a special paper by using a printing press.
In my colour graphics I only combine two component colours, and for each of those I need to prepare a separate plate.
My artistic work has its origin in experiencing the nature, entangled by music, history and tales. All this filters trough my personal experiences. It is as if I was illustrating my own wanderings.”

The art of Juha Tammenpää is clearly worthy a place in any art collection!

Juha Tammenpää, a printmaker and painter, is a member of the Association of Finnish Printmakers.
